Thanksgiving 2017

A Thanksgiving feast in Tuscania, just north of Rome in the heart of the Tuscia region.

"Our annual ViaMedina Thanksgiving feast is a celebration of the classic dishes
that American families have served on their tables for generations, to give thanks
for the good times and the difficult moments that bring them together, Tonight we
celebrate together, new friends and old, by passing these plates to each other
as a sign of love, of friendship, and of joy. A small gesture, a meal together,
your hand in mine"

"La fest del Ringraziamento di ViaMedina e una celebrazione dei piatti classici che le famiglie americane hanno servito sulle loro tavole per generazioni, per onorare i bei tempi e anche momenti difficili che li uniscono. Stasera festeggiamo insieme, amici nuovi e vecchi, passando questi piatti gli uni agli altri come un segno di amore, di amicizia e di gioia. Un piccolo gesto, mangiare insieme, le mani giunte."

There is no place in the world quite like l'Abbazia di San Giusto, and no words really do it justice. A 12th century Cistercian abbey with artefacts dating from pre-Roman times, San Giusto was lovingly restored by the Checcoli family for more than 20 years with an expert eye for every detail. ViaMedina serves a monthly menu for guests in the Abbey's nine rooms and prepares custom menus for small events. Every time we enter the Abbey we are humbled by the privilege of being able to work here, and the generosity of the Checcoli family in allowing us to host Thanksgiving here is truly an honour.

The biggest challenge of Thanksgiving dinner is finding local producers for essential ingredients, and sweet potatoes are a must at the table. Luckily, our friend Ruth at Batata Rossa Bio in Umbria is leading the sweet potato revolution in Italy, and we get ours straight from the farm. Sweet potatoes aren't just a Thanksgiving ingredient, either: they're a veritable superfood, and we couldn't make dinner without them.

What's a party without music? Since last year, we've been joined by our friends Valeria and Marco, the dynamic duo behind HOTNUTS, and they will be with us for dinner only this Thanksgiving. She's got a voice that will transport you to another era, and he's got some serious skills on the ukelele. If we're lucky, they'll bring along the kazoo, too.

A good meal needs good wine, and with our friends at Sergio Mottura, we've got it covered. The only winery in Lazio to receive the coveted Tre Bicchieri award from the Gambero Rosso, Sergio and his family have been making stellar wines for decades. Their wines are a perfect example of the treasures that Italy has to offer.

Andrea di Giampasquale is not only a brilliant photographer, he is a friend with whom we have had the good fortune to collaborate on many occasions. Our Thanksgiving photo gallery is courtesy of his well trained eye, and we're always trying to figure out new ways to work together.
